Yes, Mirth® Connect can be downloaded and installed free of charge from the manufacturer's website. However, some extensions are available for purchase. Please note that version 4.5.2 is the last free version of Mirth® Connect, and for updates you will either need to purchase a subscription or switch to another open-source fork such as BridgeLink.
No, the Mirth® Connect can do more than just exchange data at the interfaces described. It may be necessary to programmatically extend the Mirth® Connect for this purpose; we are happy to offer this service as well.
Yes, there is both a paid and a free solution for using FHIR with the Mirth® Connect.
Yes, both HCM and RFC interfaces can be implemented via the Mirth® Connect.
The extension is always tied to a specific Mirth® Connect version and usually needs to be recompiled/rebuilt by the extension's developer whenever Mirth® Connect is updated. With a Java library, the Mirth® Connect version does not need to be checked beforehand (unless the library uses Mirth® Connect functions); it can be updated without further checks.
